Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Prep Time 3 minutes
Cook Time 7 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings: 1 sandwich

Ingredients

  • 2 slices sandwich bread white or sourdough
  • 2 slices mild cheddar cheese or 3/4 cup shredded
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • salt optional, to taste

Method

  1. Spread the softened butter evenly over one side of each bread slice, all the way to the edges.
  2. Place one bread slice, butter-side down, in a cold nonstick skillet.
  3. Layer the cheese evenly over the bread in the skillet.
  4. Top with the second bread slice, butter-side facing up.
  5. Set the skillet over medium-low heat and cook for 3-4 minutes, until the bottom is deep golden brown.
  6. Carefully flip the sandwich with a spatula.
  7. Cook the second side for another 3-4 minutes, until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
  8. Remove from the skillet, let rest for 1 minute, then slice in half and serve warm.

Notes

For extra-crisp edges, spread butter (or mayonnaise) all the way to the corners of the bread. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3-4 days and reheat in a skillet over medium-low heat, per USDA food safety guidance.
